What does glutathione actually do in the body?
Chemically, glutathione is a small tripeptide, glutamate, cysteine, glycine, that cells synthesize continuously and use as a workhorse of redox balance: it donates electrons to neutralize reactive oxygen species and is a cofactor for enzyme families that process peroxides and conjugate foreign compounds in the liver. Parenteral administration delivers the intact molecule, and in clinical medicine intravenous glutathione has a legitimate niche history, most cited in reducing certain chemotherapy side effects under specialist supervision.
For the wellness uses marketed to healthy adults, the record is thin: small studies, short durations, mixed results, and a 2025 narrative review concluding the evidence base does not yet support the marketed claims. Framed plainly: real molecule, real chemistry, plausible rationale for the route, unproven benefit in healthy users; individual results vary and are not typical.
What is the skin-whitening issue the FDA warned about?
A large international market uses injectable glutathione for skin lightening, on the theory that it shifts melanin chemistry. The FDA's position is unambiguous: no injectable product is approved for skin whitening or lightening, the products sold for it are unapproved drugs of often unverifiable origin, and the agency has warned consumers against the practice directly. Much of the online content about glutathione injections comes from this market, which is worth knowing when you read it.
